The nuts are falling from the trees, knocking me on the head, telling me its time to dye, its time to dye! I've done absolutely no regular dyeing and no rust dyeing this summer. I ordered silk scarves several weeks ago so I was prepared. I gathered up some acorns, some pine needles, some leaves.
We had that really nice day in October where the temps reached 70+ degrees. That was the day to dye.
I did some bundle dyeing like I did last year with Shelley Ryan, The Wisconsin Gardener at The Flying Pig Gallery and Garden in Algoma. I used the nuts I gathered, some black walnuts, some black walnut soup (water + walnuts), assorted dry teas, turmeric, vinegars and some wire to wrap them up. Placed them in zip lock bags and now I need to wait about a month and see what develops. Hopefully something beautiful...

Tomorrow night is the Reception for "Farm to Plate" at the Trout Museum in downtown Appleton from 6-9, free admission and open to the public. I wish I could go but I've got a previous engagement. Tomorrow night is also Cruize the Avenue with collector cars in mass quantities. This Saturday is Octoberfest in downtown Appleton too. Should be a great weekend downtown.

This exhibit, "Farm to Plate" is up until October 28 if you don't get to see it this weekend.

This has been a relaxing summer for me, spending several full weeks at our cabin. Early in the season I painted the livingroom, but since then haven't done any house-type work up here.

I've been doing lots of sewing on the screen porch, the best of both worlds. I can watch the birds, an occasional deer and too many of those dastardly squirrels in our bird feeders while sewing away.

Its been fun watching Clyde, our golden doodle go from refusing to go into the lake to swimming and playing in the water. Just a few more weeks to enjoy the summer like weather.

I haven't posted since the end of May, summer time is flying by. Things have been happening in my creative life even so. Fiber Artists Coalition had an exhibit at Mosquito Hill in New London, WI. Then there was the South Shore Art Center exhbit in Cohasset, MA and currently the Bloomingdale Park District Museum in Bloomingdale, IL.

I was recently juried into the PortalWisconsin.org website available to all Wisconsin artists. You may want to check it out, there is a ton of artwork in all mediums to peruse.

As a professional artist member of SAQA, one of my artworks on the SAQA website was selected by curator and fellow SAQA and Fiber Artists Coalition member, Linda Witt-Henke for the August Virtual Galley titled 'Out On a Limb' that will be up now and throughout the month of August on the SAQA.com website. There is some beautful work in this exhibit, I am very honored to be included.

Studio Art Quilters Association (SAQA) of which I am a member has a benefit auction each year where members donate a 12 x 12 inch piece of art and these are auctioned off in September. This is my contribution for 2012, I've done this for the past 4 years now. 'Three of a Kind' was pieced using silk, hand dyed, damask, and a variety of other fabrics. I love the colors though they are brighter in person.

If you are a quilter who makes wall hangings I had a revelation when I was making the hanging sleeve. If I can explain this, I first make two sleeves so that you can put a hanger on the slat that goes through the sleeves in the center if you want. I sewed the top of the sleeve at the same time I attached the facing to the quilt. Before I did that, I sewed the sleeves together 3/4 of an inch from this seam to help prevent the slat from showing at the top of the quilt. Then the sleeve was hand sewn at the bottom. That is probably clear as mud, if you don't get it, let me know and I will better explain.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Clyde is our new golden doodle puppy, he's 3 1/2 months old. We are in the process of housetraining and kennel training. Our first night wasn't horrible and he's getting the hang of the kennel. His first day with us was really excellent, I think because he was so 'pooped' from his long car ride and 3 hour beauty appointment. The night went pretty well, he didn't get up until 3am to go out and then went back to sleep for a couple hours.

Today we had several potty accidents in the house, but we went for two walks around the block and he's taken a couple of good naps. Whoever said this was like having a new baby absolutely right! Wish us luck.
I am very interested in dyeing using natural plant dyes. Many summer weekends at the cottage have included time spent rust dyeing. I have an old rusty wheelbarrow that gives me great rust dyed fabric results.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This past summer I went to The Flying Pig in Algoma for a class given by Shelley Ryan from PBS. The class was on dyeing silk scarves using flowers, mulch, tea, coffee, etc. You can check out my post dated July 23, 2011. I think the results were fabulous.

I also did some dyeing with Black Walnut hulls, post dated October 2, 2011. Not being fully satisfied with the results I needed to know MORE. Anyway I was very interested in continuing my dyeing experiments.

India Flint, the author of Eco Colour has been dyeing for many years and wrote several books on the subject. Although she lives in Australia, her methods, philosophy and sense of ecological responsibility transfer to anywhere in the world. I am very excited to try some of her methods.

She talks about assessing the choices you make with regard to how those choices impact the earth. She also stresses that the possibilities for colors are infinite depending on so many factors. I love that she is a 'wing it' kind of gal that likes to experiment without being terribly specific, though safety is always number one.

If you're looking for a different, unpredictable, cheap way to dye your own original fabrics I highly recommend this book and give it an A+ rating. For a professional review of her books, go to www.indiaflint.com.

Along with reading the book, I also went for my usual Saturday trek around the block which entails about a 2 mile walk along wooded and swampy areas, a visit to the frozen creek, and a view of Lake Noquebay where its not unusual to see deer, birds, the occasional ferret, grouse, turkeys and other northern Wisconsin critters. I usually take my camera, my cell phone (in case I meet up with a bear) and this time I brought a bag to carry any plant materials I planned to gather along the way in hopes of doing some eco dyeing at home this week.

Well I think I was successful. I gathered three types of red berries, not sure why the birds hadn't found these yet. Also some little tiny pine cones, some medium size pine cones, some fern fronds, tree bark, lichen, oak leaves and other non-identied leaves. When gathering plant materials its important to pick things off the ground and not rip bark off of trees. The object is to use sustainable plant materials, not to overuse or abuse the environment.

From India's book I also learned about the purpose of mordants, which assist the dye in attaching to the fibers. Some mordants that are suggested are iron, copper, brass. Since my husband has a small target practice area on our property I was able to scavenge lots of brass casings. I also saved my coffee grounds from the weekend, and the onion peels from Saturday's dinner. I think I'm ready to give this another try.

If you have done any natural dyeing, please comment or write to me to tell me what your successes and failures have been. Thanks for reading. See ya.

Duffy's Dad was finished in January. This was taken from a black and white photograph from 1944. Whenever I start a piece with subject matter that I am unfamiliar with, I do a lot of research for similar images. In this case I looked for aircraft from the era, with the help of my husband who is a WWII army buff. From the photograph which wasn't very clear he gave me some options for what he thought the plane was. From there I did internet searchs to get a better picture of the plane. Then I went on to the uniform and tried to get better idea of the color, details, the cap, etc.

Mary Kay Baum is my cousin who takes beautiful nature photography in her spare time. She has led and is leading an interesting full life. Click on her name to see some of her photos and to see what her real passion is along with her two younger sisters.

One of her photos inspired me to do a series of artworks. I had this photograph in my studio for awhile, not knowing what to do with it. In October 2011 I took a class with Sue Benner, a well known, highly respected mixed meda artist. In this class we brought photos that inspired us, that we wanted to do something with. I chose the Cedar Swamp photo by Mary Kay. In Sue's class I learned more on creating abstracts from nature. I have taken other classes in the past from other talented women on abstraction (Yvonne Porcella and Cynthia Corbin), but sometimes you get stuck and need a refresher.

There are four small studies, of which I only show 2 here, the other 2 are unworthy of completion (in my opinion). #1 is shown above.

Starting out small I made 4 small abstract versions about 7 inches square. Some of my favorite fabrics are the rust dyed and in silk dyed with black walnuts. When I dyed this silk fabric it really didn't take the walnut coloring, but sitting in the dye pot for about a week it developed mold on the fabric . Luckily for me I loved the look of the mold blotches and it stayed in the fabric when I washed it. This is used in the sky and the foreground.

Cedar Swamp #2 is similar to #1, duh. That was obvious. You can see the tree in the mid-ground and the foreground are also rust dyed with tannin which gives it the beautiful greys. Cedar Swamp #3 was fragmented and reassembled. Although it hardly looks like the others, I like it and I think that's all that matters. *****
Then, on to #4 which is the largest to date. This piece contains more of the same fabrics. From this photo it doesn't look that clean, but it really is a major improvement. It cleared my head and helped me focus on what I needed to concentrate on.

Yes, I know, these were made 'after' Christmas, but they were Christmas presents. These turned out great, really cute and I need to make some more. They were quite simple, quick and non-irritating. I started work on a commission that is just about finished as of today. I'm anxious to get back to finishing my Cedar Swamp large piece. I really love how its turning out and its almost done. See? This is the fourth in my Cedar Swamp series, and the largest. My cousin, Mary Kay Baum took a photo of Cedar Swamp, which was owned by my grandparents and is now owned by my cousins. The photo was so inspiring, though this representation, looks nothing like it.

My first adventure with Black Walnut dyeing. I received a box full of freshly picked Black Walnuts from my friend Tammy’s dreaded trees. I’ve searched the internet for ‘how to dye with these nuts’ and come up with lots of variations. Sounds like whatever you do, you will come up with some sort of dyeing success. So, I’m hopeful of good results. I’m also impatient so I will sort of follow the recipes that are quick and easy, which is ‘my way’ as Frank Sinatra would say.

I covered the bottom of a graniteware 5 gallon pot with the black walnuts, hulls and nuts, green and black and some with mold growing from them. This pot is/was a lovely mustard color, I’m afraid it won’t stay this color, on the inside at least.

I covered them with water plus some so I have a depth of about 8 inches of water and nuts.
Put the kettle on the stove to bring to a boil. Then I will boil them for 30 minutes. 15 minutes into bringing the pot to a boil process and the water is quite black. After 30 minutes of simmering, the fabric was added and continued simmering for another hour.

Fabrics in the bath are: 1 yd cotton sateen, ½ yard basic cotton, 1 yd of partially pre-dyed damask that I then pleated in 2 inch pleats and hand stitched with quilt thread to hold the pleats. Also some misc. unknown content pieces of fabric. I’ll have to weigh it when its done dyeing.

Pre dyed:

After 1 hour in the simmering pot, the fabric looked about milk chocolate color, I was aiming for a darker brown so I decided to add 5 large rusty washers and let it simmer another hour.

Then I added red wine vinegar, about a cup and let it soak another 24 hours. After 24 hours I rinsed, then tossed in the washer with synthrapol and a little laundry detergent, warm wash, cold rinse, then Dryer.

First dye results:

I’m not happy with the weak color, like a faded milk chocolate. I will re-dye again with more black walnuts. Some of the pieces turned out lovely, like the silk lining very dark brown, satin nice antiqued color and the fine loosely woven unknown content napkins.

Initial weight of full batch is 15 oz. I re-dyed 11 oz. the 1 yd of cotton sateen, half yard of misc. cotton and large damask piece.

In the re-dye I used the leftover dye and added another layer of green hulls. I boiled it for 45 minutes then put the fabric in overnight with the cover on to keep it warm. Well, it ended up being a week rather than overnight. I didn’t have time to rinse and thought, hey, what the heck, if one night is good, a week is better.

So this weekend I finally removed the fabric from the dye pot and hung it on the line outside to dry to enhance the setting of the dye, then I ironed it to possibly improve the adherence by heat setting the dye again. Then I washed and dryed the fabric in the dryer.

Results: The second batch did dye slightly darker than the short term dyeing. I am not enthralled with the results. I was hoping that the cottons would dye as dark as the silk kimino lining that turned a lovely rich warm coffee color. Overall I am happy with the results and will try this again.

You never know what you’re going to get with natural dyeing, at least I don’t. Its always an adventure. The excitement is in the expectation for me. I realized I am an experimenter in my cooking and dyeing and many things I do. I enjoy trying new things, it’s the excitement of new discoveries that I am after.

Using the techniques I learned from Shelley Ryan back in July (see my previous post) I wanted to try using all the damask linens I have been collecting from rummage sales. These are some of the fabrics I use in my artwork so I wanted to see if the dyeing worked as well on cotton as it did with silk. My results this time were similar to the silk, but with less color, more shades of grey. This could be due to the fact I didn't use any flowers and when I used wire it was steel, not copper.

The procedure was I had four separate Ziploc quart size bags, A, B,C and D. In two of the dye bags I used wire to wrap the fabric and natural dyes. For those with wire the fabric was wrapped around ingredients and then wrapped tightly with wire, those w/o wire were still wrapped tightly around ingredients. Then I poured about 3/4 of a cup of white vinegar in each bag. I left all the bags in the sun for 8 days, then dumped out the ingredients which looked and smelled like compost, then dried the fabric in the sun for several hours. After rubbing off the excess coffe grounds, tea leaves, and other gook, I hung them on the line til they were really dry outside in the sun still. Then they were pressed with hot iron which kind of stunk up the house for awhile. Then I washed them with laundry detergent, dried them in the dryer and pressed again. Each bag had a different variety of food bits, tea and coffee in them. They all had vinegar. You can see my results below and what was in each bag.

A. Vinegar, wire, smashed purple grapes w/seeds, used coffee grounds, used Hot Cinnamon Spice tea

B. Vinegar, mango fruit tea, rust dust, tannin, smashed purple grapes

C. Vinegar, wire, Pineapple calypso tea, Spiced black tea, smashed purple grapes

D. Vinegar, wire, Mango passion tea, used Hot Cinnamon Spice tea, smashed cherry pits

A. B. C. D.

Have you done of this type of dyeing? If so, I'd love to hear about your results. I'd like to try hemp, has anyone dyed hemp with natural dyes?

Too much or just enough time on my hands leads to hair brain ideas or is it just creative thoughts? I'm on the verge of a week long vacation with no specific plans. It excites me to think I will have all this time and unlimited possibilities.

Goal #1 is to spend time in my studio/sewing room. But, I'm pulled to read a book, work on my crocheting, dye some more fabric, do some sketching, catch up on my internet surfing, email reading, blog checkouts, write to MY blog which I have so very much abandoned, and for sure take a break from the gym. Where to begin?

I started the weekend with a trip to the Trout Museum of Art Biennial Member Exhibit, Friday night. I was pleasantly surprised by the diversified group of great artworks and a nice crowd of art lovers. The fiber arena was well represented by myself and friends, Gwyned Trefethen and Jeanne Pfister as well as a few others I was unfamiliar with. I submitted "Gawking Cranes" for this exhibit which runs through August. One of my favorite pieces was by glass artist, Mary Jo Weidert. She does fused glass and has her own gallery in Menash, the Wild Apple Gallery. Check it out. Pat Bishophttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05912385178738419458noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4555543090730957039.post-29679145128650626512011-06-05T20:31:00.000-05:002011-06-05T20:31:46.625-05:00Milagros - Jack Alone

This is my favorite long weekend because the holiday part is the first day usually, followed by three days of dong whatever you want. This year was a little different but still very enjoyable. Well, we weren't having a big meal on Thanksgiving as the married kids are spending it with their other half's families. Jess and Jason came to our house Thanksgiving afternoon to spend the long weekend with us. Thursday was 1) read the ads for Black Friday. 2) plan for Black Friday shopping trip starting at 2am. 3) start making approximately 30 fabric wallets as gifts for friends. Click on Valori Wells to see the pattern and link to "Keep Me in Stitches" quilt shop where you can purchase the pattern and fabric. Jacqi shared the pattern with us last weekend at our Bjorklunden retreat last weekend. Thursday night we selected coordinating fabrics and cut them to the pattern size.
Friday we did get up at 1:45 am to do our "Black Friday" shopping trip with daughters/sisters Tracy and Liz. We had a chilling fun bargain hunting adventure arriving back home by 10 am. Naps immediately followed. Afterwards Jess spent the day with one of her nieces and one of her nephews having the funnest day ever according to one young gentleman. Later that day we finished pinning together wallet fabric preparing for sewing.

That evening sewing, turning and pressing was done

.

Saturday was brunch with the family, grand kids and all. It was a wonderful morning together. Liz and Tracy picked out their favorite wallet from the assortment. They will get them as soon as we finish the closures. We thought they were an appropriate initiation gift to "Black Friday" shopping, their first time for this, where you just use your cash and cards, no time for big bulky purses. Its serious business, hunt and buy, no browsing. Get in and get out.

Later that day after more bargain shopping, a nap by one and a workout by the other, more work was done on the wallets, we opted for buttons and buttonholes. At the end of the day we had put together 37 (thirty-seven)!!!! Valori Wells wallets.

Are you one of the lucky ones on our Christmas list? To make your own wallet check out Jacqi's shop, "Keep Me In Stitches", Appleton, WI. She has great fabrics and buttons to finish these quick, cute gifts. Easy too, but 37 is a lot. Thank goodness, Jess and I worked well as a team. Thanks J!

Jacqi invites 30-40 of her closest sewing/crafting/scrapping/knitting friends for a four day fun-filled gathering to indulge in your favorite pastime along with eating, talking smart, eating, staying up late, eating and generally having a "Dear Camp" extended weekend. Think hunters' deer camp, female style. <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And then there's the issue of the ugly slipper, forbidden to set foot outside the building. <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Along with our hippo fabric mug rugs (a Jacqi tradition of making a coaster out of fabric and batting, similar to a mini-quilt, approximately 4-5 inches square), (sorry no mug rug pics)many of us made Valori Wells wallets, too cute. <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Jacqi's in Houston, Texas this week having a great time seeing all the exhibits and shopping at market for her Appleton, WI quilt shop. She took time out of her busy week to send me this photo of her and my quilt, "Walk of the Cranes" which is a finalist at the International Quilt Festival in Houston this year. Thank you Jacqi! Can't wait to see what you buy at market for the shop! Thanks for thinking of me...love the picture, especially since you're in it!Pat Bishophttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05912385178738419458noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4555543090730957039.post-68940815074867555372010-10-24T21:30:00.000-05:002010-10-24T21:30:33.582-05:00Sandra Began Event at Butte des Morts Country Club Oct 22-23
It was a lovely location with a great crowd. Lots of shoppers on Friday night and Saturday. Had lots of great comments and met some very nice shoppers and exhibitors. I would call it a very successful event. Next year's event is already scheduled for October 14-15, 2011. Mark your calendars for a fun two days of shopping! Check out Sandra Began on Facebook to see a list of unique exhibitors.Pat Bishophttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05912385178738419458noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4555543090730957039.post-54562547066012485162010-10-10T20:39:00.000-05:002010-10-10T20:39:03.026-05:00SAQA Auction a huge success - "Siberian" sold
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Studio Art Quilters Association has an annual auction of 12 inch square art quilts donated by SAQA members on a voluntary basis. This is the first year I've contributed a piece to the effort. I am happy to say my art quilt, "Siberian" sold to someone from New Jersey, thank you very much. The money raised through this auction goes to help SAQA member fiber artists put on exhibitions and all the costs that go along with it. I believe the money raised this year was over $50,000. Wow! SAQA is a great group, I have learned so much from all the other members who generously share their knowledge and experience in this medium.
Pat Bishophttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05912385178738419458noreply@blogger.com1
